Talk with Arol Wolford and Ken Rhee on VIM and Its Applications in BIM Projects

Arol Wolford, a BIM legend, a pioneer and passionate advocate of building intelligence, and former board member of Revit, will speak to the ShanghaiBIM community again in the evening of June 1.

 

Joel Pennington, Head of Product at VIM, will introduce the new features of VIM, a real-time platform for the built environment that empowers AEC professionals with instant, unlimited access to BIM data anywhere they go and on the devices they already own. 

 

Ken Rhee, Co-Founder and CEO of Integral VIM, will showcase some of the recent BIM projects with applications of VIM and introduce a VIM-based 3D smart building operating platform developed by Integral VIM. Registered in Shanghai, Integral VIM is a 50:50 joint venture co-invested by Arol and Ken.

Arol Wolford has dedicated his career to the proposition that sharing information among owners, architects, contractors, and manufacturers is the key to creating better, more efficient buildings.

Arol founded Construction Market Data (CMD), a global leader in building information serving the United States, Canada, Mexico, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, China, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia. CMD grew from 5 employees in 1982 to 1300 employees in 2000, offering well-known information sources such as CMD Bulletins, Architects’ First Source, CanaData, Clark Reports, CMD Electronic, CMD Connect to SalesForce and Microsoft CRM, Manufacturers’ Survey Associates, and RSMeans. CMD Group was acquired by Reed Elsevier in 2000.

Arol is an original board member of Revit Technology Corporation (acquired by Autodesk in 2002), which created the first parametric building modeler. In 2003, Arol founded SmartBIM, a creator of Revit Objects.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) named Arol, an honorary member in 1997. In 2007 he was asked to serve on the AIA 150 Board, the first non-architect to be so honored. In 1999, Arol received the Construction Specification Institute (CSI) President’s, Award Winner. Arol also serves on the board for Building Systems Design (BSD Speclink) and ManufactOn.

Joel Pennington

Head of Product, VIM AEC

 

As the Head of Product, he is the leading evangelist of VIM’s product and solutions, overseeing the organization’s product vision, strategy, design, and development. Before joining VIM, Joel held management, art, and technical positions at Disney, Electronic Arts, and Autodesk, where he helped lead augmented and virtual reality, strategy, and development.

Joel led design in collaboration with James Cameron’s company, Lightstorm, to rebuild the organization’s Augmented Reality Film camera for the Avatar sequels.

Joel graduated from the Vancouver Film School in 2001. His short film, “A Cheese Without Cause,” won multiple awards and was shown at film festivals throughout North America. At Disney and Electronic Arts, Joel spent ten years working on Film Virtual Production features for Tent Pole movies and AAA game titles.

Ken Rhee

Ken has successfully completed a series of BIM consulting assignments together with Arol Wolford and other collaborators in China and South Korea. He is currently developing VXBOS, a VIM AEC-based 3D building operating software. Ken has organized a number of BIM-related events and led the publication of a report on the use of BIM in mainland China for Urban Land Institute.

Ken also serves as the CEO of Huhan Advisory, a firm that primarily advises real estate developers and investment funds on investment opportunities at home and abroad.

Since 2012, Ken has served as Executive Director for Urban Land Institute (ULI) China Mainland and has authored or edited a number of ULI publications, and has led a series of ULI Advisory Services Panels in China and South Korea,

Prior to Huhan, Ken served as Executive Director at Morgan Stanley in its real estate banking and investment departments and conducted M&A advisory work at JP Morgan in Hong Kong and Singapore.

 

 

Abel Xu

Director, Integral VIM

Abel has served BIM coordinators for multiple BIM consulting projects, including repositioning, green field development, historic preservation and interior designs in China, with the team. He pays close attention to the development of the latest BIM techs at home and abroad.

 

Abel joined Huhan Advisory in 2012 and he has 15 years of experience in providing advisory services to real estate developers and funds.

 

 

Prior to Huhan, Abel served as Analyst at China Real Estate Information Corporation where he was in charge of strategic and financial analysis of property developers, with a focus on mainland Chinese developers listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX).
